Section 8, also known as the housing choice voucher program, is a major program created by the federal government as a way to assist very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford housing in the private market. Those eligible for the program are able to locate housing that fits their needs outside of subsidized housing projects.
Though Section 8 is a federal program it is administered and managed locally by public housing agencies, who receive funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) is our local public housing agency and oversees the voucher program to all involved within 50 miles of their central office.
